National book awards select THE WISDOM OF YAWDY RUM by Minnesota author Micheal Lane

EXCELSIOR, Minn. (June 12, 2008) —Each year independent publishers release extraordinary books that often fail to garner national recognition. This year, Minnesota author Micheal Lane has set that notion on its ear. In the past two months, three national book awards have selected Lane’s debut novel, The Wisdom of Yawdy Rum, for special honors. The Eric Hoffer Award for Excellence in Writing, The National Indie Book Award, and The Independent Publishers Book Award all individually honored Lane’s title in a process that culminated at the National Book Expo held recently in Los Angeles. There, the Independent Publishers Book Award, also known as the IPPY Award, designated The Wisdom of Yawdy Rum as Best Regional Fiction from over 3,200 entries submitted.

Set primarily in the historic French Quarter of New Orleans, The Wisdom of Yawdy Rum is a story that takes the reader into the world of traditional New Orleans jazz, corporate politics, and hurricanes—both real and emotional. A senior marketing executive meets Yawdy Rum, an old New Orleans jazzman who turns out to be a sage. The story focuses on their friendship and the wisdom Yawdy has acquired through his life as a musician, and on the dangers facing New Orleans from the threat of a gulf hurricane. The story offers insights into the life of an executive wrestling with the demands of corporate politics, an exhausting travel schedule, and the challenge of balancing work with the needs of a family trying to raise an autistic child. The story has been described as a blend of Mitch Albom’s book, Tuesday’s with Morrie, along with a spicy mix of New Orleans jazz, cuisine, and history thrown in. The Wisdom of Yawdy Rum is a blend of memoir and inspirational writing focused on relationships, self-discovery, finding balance, and discovering the power of paying attention to bring harmony into a person’s life.

“While the story of Yawdy Rum is fictional, the challenges and emotions portrayed through the main character are real,” said Lane. “Unfortunately, these experiences are not uncommon in today’s world. That’s why it’s important that people have the knowledge and tools to help themselves, whether they’re facing a professional dilemma, a health-related problem, or interpersonal issues.” It doesn’t matter if you’re single, married with kids, climbing the career ladder, or managing a household, life is full of people and situations that challenge your ability to lead a happy, productive, and balanced life. The Wisdom of Yawdy Rum shares concepts from easy-to-understand music theory and common-sense thinking to illustrate seven basic principles that can teach anyone, in any situation, how to harness the power of paying attention.

In order to help the victims of Hurricane Katrina and as an extension of the process of helping others bring harmony into their own lives, Lane donates a portion of the proceeds from book sales to Sweet Home New Orleans, formerly the New Orleans Musicians Hurricane Relief Fund, and Habitat for Humanity.
The Wisdom of Yawdy Rum is published by Expert Publishing, Andover, Minn. The hardcover book is available through book stores or online at www.yawdyrum.com.
